themisreadcity.com is a website owned by Scott Timberg, one of the editors of the book “The Misread City: New Literary Los Angeles”. The website operates as Timberg’s blogs about West Coast culture.
“The Misread City” gives readers a look at the literary Los Angeles they never knew existed. Underneath the shadow of the Kodak Theatre, the Getty, Disney Hall, and the shiny happy film people, growls and grinds a literary heartbeat. Some are good writers, some fakes, some opening their shirts to passersby in West Hollywood in a cinematic cry for attention, but in its own blurred and indecent way, under the sun and beneath the palms, Los Angeles writing has thrived. This collection draws the reader into the rooms of poets and writers who write in Southern California washed in the smog-filled air.
themisreadcity.com is a place for Timberg to share his deeper insight about the book as well as West Coast culture. However, this website was shut down and there is currently no available information about it.
This new and necessary book―a collection of author profiles, literary journalism and speculative pieces about the Southland's writing and publishing scene―aims to capture the Southern California of here and now. We want to get at the Los Angeles that came after the gumshoes, the wisecracking Englishmen, after the Boosters, the Beats, and the boozers, after the despairing heroines of Joan Didion and the coked-up rich kids of Bret Easton Elli
Scott Timberg is the editor of The Misread City: New Literary Los Angeles and author of Culture Crash: The Killing of the Creative Class, an examination of the damages to our cultural landscape wrought by recent technological and economic shifts and an argument for a more equitable and navigable future. Timberg is writing a book called Beeswing: Britain, Folk Rock, and the End of the 60s with the guitarist Richard Thompson.
