Fret wear results in buzzing, poor intonation, and a degrading of the feel of the fingerboard. The result is the need for leveling and dressing or even the expense of fret replacement. Premature wear can be avoided with quality fret wire, and with our stainless steel frets completely eliminated.

Fret size has a great deal to do with the action of your guitar. Low frets put your fingertips right on the fingerboard with little room to squeeze the strings out of tune or to get under them for bending. Tall frets are the opposite.  · That shorter wire corresponds to Gibson Jumbo width but try the .090", it works just as well. Stainless is a different story. I find that it's very hard to bend a radius into this wire so I only fret necks with it if the fingerboard has a straight 12" radius as that's how it comes off the roll.

 · Now: if you have a guitar that you like the acoustic tone of; my advise is to stay with the kind ( metallurgical content) of the wire you are using. (99% of folks use nickel/ silver) If you'd like to brighten up the sound of a dull-sounding guitar; stainless wire could be a tool you could use to do that.

 · "6105" can typically run from .092x.048 to .098x.055 - that's quite a difference. Also, the hardest nickel-silver frets will be 18%. All this means is do not use fret size labels - use precise fret size dimensions instead.

 · People who do tend to press hard when they fret (me...) typically steer clear of 6105s and other tall frets. I'd prefer the 6150s, or vintage Fender style frets like 6230s. I also tend to play heavier strings (I like .011s), and I don't shred, both of which influence my fret preference too I suppose. YMMV, but I don't think 6105s are for everybody.

Jescar makes a wire that seems to have all the answers though, their 39040 (in either 18% NS or stainless), it’s .039” tall by .040” wide. That’s practically half-round. For folks who prefer really narrow wire, as in the days of yore, I use Dunlop 6310.

 · As far as OP's question goes, fret dimensions are like wood, finishes, neck widths, pickup designs, etc. no one option is better overall, it's all a matter of personal preference. Best to hit a well-stocked store and try basses with different wire, preferably with similar-gauge strings.

 · That's exactly what I'm talking about. I was surprised to hear that the new J-45 wire is as narrow as it is, but I don't think it's just the narrowness of the wire. It's a combination of the wire width, crown height, and the sectional shape of the fret itself. I play with a lot of slides, and the fret profile definitely makes a difference.
