About Mariner Software
Mariner Software – an interesting name for a software company, right! The name Mariner, like the first software products, was the founder’s idea, influenced by the fact that as a young man, he and his father built boats and computers together in their garage (very Apple-like, huh?). No less influential is that his dad worked on navigation computers for almost all the early rockets and satellites for NASA which included the Mariner Space Program.
Like a lot of companies, they started small, very small. And just like other start-ups, it was the work of one person but if Mariner was going to anywhere- one wasn’t enough.
Mariner’s leadership as a developer has not been limited to the creative writing market but has found success in the home and office markets as well. In 2008, Mariner entered into an agreement to republish MacGourmet Deluxe, the award-winning recipe building software. In 2009, ReceiptWallet was acquired and the product rebranded as Paperless, quickly becoming one of the most popular titles in the Mariner product line. In 2010, Mariner acquired Narrator from Dejal Systems, adding one of the most popular text-to-speech applications on the Macintosh OS X platform. In 2013, Mariner acquired the assets to Advenio, Inc which consisted of MacGourmet, MacGourmet Deluxe, and Gourmet for iOS (formerly MacGourmet Touch).

As a chef, professionally, and the meal preparer for my family, I look to get every edge I can in the kitchen. I reviewed a ton of recipe management apps and landed on MacGourmet. This is so easy to use. I store all my recipes in it on my Mac then I sync up with it at work on my iPad (you need the iOS app for that). It's intuitive and lets me keep all my nutritional info on every recipe too. This is the best one out there.
Loving this software as I put together a family cookbook...easy to work with and love that you can insert pictures.
An excellent product. I have been using MacGourmet 3 for several years, and I have loved it. I bought it because I had implemented my own recipe-cum-shopping list program years ago, and MacGourmet provided everything on my wish list and then some. The major good points:1. Support is fantastic. Every time I have contacted them with a question, they have gotten back to me on the same day (usually on Saturday, since that's my shopping day), and have given me solutions, with one exception (syncing shopping lists, see below).2. It's easy to import recipes, and even easier in MacGourmet 4 than MacGourmet 3. In MacGourmet 3, I had to highlight the URL in a browser and use the Web service "Import Recipe" or "Clip Recipe". Now, I simply find the recipe using the browser right in MacGourmet and click the "Import" button in the lower left corner. Also, I'm now able to import recipes from americastestkitchen.com -- always my go-to site, but previously I had to copy and paste the text.Additional good points for the importing: they now have a drop-down list of sites whose recipe formats they recognize, to the right of the Web address box. I have read complaints about not recognizing all formats, but it's unrealistic to expect them to recognize all formats. I've worked in computing for 45 years and I have seen that unless there's either a single dominant market player or a powerful standards body, you have to deal with individual companies vying for market share (or in the case of Web sites, for eyeballs) and to do this they use proprietary formats, protocols, and software. So you can't blame MacGourmet -- actually, they recognize an impressive number of formats. And, they provide an easy workaround if they don't recognize a format. When you browse to a recipe, you can copy and paste from the left-hand window of MacGourmet to the recipe format in the right-hand window. You need to pick the right piece of the recipe for each box -- be sure to put the ingredients in the ingredients box, directions in the directions box, etc. I was amazed that it did a reasonably good job of parsing the ingredients into quantity, unit of measure, and description. That's a very hard job because menu authors are idiosyncratic about the way they describe ingredients and quantities.2. It generates your shopping lists. Syncing to an iPhone used to work, now it doesn't work correctly (it's not removing my old shopping lists) but it does add new ones. This doesn't help me enough because I have too many shopping lists! However, once again, there's a workaround: just print it. The big thing for me is that it generates the list -- that's a major time-saver.3. It computes the nutrition value for every recipe. This is amazing. I use this as a weight-watchers member (just copy the fat, carbs, and protein from MacGourmet to your Weight Watcher tools to get Weight Watchers points). No, it won't ever compute Weight Watchers points for you -- Weight Watchers keeps changing the formulas, quite likely for market share (see discussion of formats, above). I'm also as a former Coumadin user (so I had to watch out for vitamin K). MacGourmet should be a great help for all sorts of nutritional needs. It uses the USDA nutritional database, computes virtually every vitamin, mineral, and nutritional value you can imagine, and comes close to the values sometimes printed at the ends of recipes, so I believe it does the job quite well.4. The search features are really cool. You can search on just about any field represented in the currently selected section of MacGourmet. So if you select the Recipe Box, you can search on Name, Ingredient, Category, Source, etc. In other words, if you vaguely remember the word "Roasted" in a recipe you really liked, you can search on the Name; if you want to get rid of all those red peppers in the hydrator, you can search on ingredient.5. Menu plans: you can plan all your menus for a week at a time.In sum, it's helped me to make my shopping efficient, healthy, and economical, and I can do my shopping lists on a plane or train if I happen to be traveling.Problems (yes, there are a few):1. Syncing shopping lists doesn't work right.2. In MacGourmet 3, I could select the font size for Meal Plans and Shopping Lists, now I can't.3. Occasional weird numbers of items in Shopping Lists when the units have to be converted to get the total.
Just what I orderes. Fit great.
