How Long Does It Take To Build A Car

Each car must meet a production process with many different stages before being delivered to consumers. Accordingly, car models need to go through the stages from sketching the design, making a clay model, choosing the right material and color, conducting testing, screening and finally approving the car model.

After the car design is completed, businesses will conduct promotions to listen to customer feedback from the market and make changes before deciding to begin mass production.

To be widely commercialized, each car also has to go through a process of manufacturing components and assembling meticulously and accurately car parts such as chassis, body, car paint, interior,... So do you know, how long does it take to build a car? An average car has about 30,000 parts. Once those parts are manufactured and brought to the final production line, it takes automakers about 18 to 35 hours to mass produce a car - from welding,  assembling the entire engine to painting. This building process requires about 3 to 4 typical shifts, with hundreds of skilled and experienced workers supporting.

How are Cars Built in the Factory?

Car bodies are made from rolls of steel with many rolls using lighter, stiffer and corrosion-resistant steel. A huge 5,000 ton press stamps the steel into shape, with the steel sheets cut to size and pressed into shape using dies. Dies consist of upper and lower sections that vary by model and part. In the plant, there are about 9,000 pairs of dies. After stamping, the pressed steel is put on a special dolly.

After a quality check, the freshly stamped parts are moved to the body-assembly shop. Door, floor and roof panels are welded during assembly. With the body frame in position, welding machines got to work. Machine arms with forked tips, weld parts at an internal of 2-5 cm. The welded bodies are assembled alongside other panels including trunks and fenders.

After further quality checks, the assembled bodies are ready for painting. Three coats of paint are applied with the final coat and color ordered by the customers. Before being painted, the car has to go through a rigorous testing process. The car's tires are taken into a room painted white and lit, the workers will use a cloth soaked in hi-light oil to wipe off any stains. Under this special light, this oil allows the naked eye to see any defects in the metal plate. Defects will be repaired on site by skilled workers.

At the parts-assembly shop, components are added to the completed car bodies. In total, 3,000 - 4,000 parts are added during assembly. Two workers must work together to mount large parts of the car, such as engines, transmissions and suspension systems. They use special adjustable carriages, which improves efficiency and reduces physical demands on workers. From below, workers check that the assembly is correct.

Next, the wheels are added, followed by front and reer windows. With the outer  assembly complete the focus turns to inside the car. This includes adding engine and brake oil while robots attend to the seats.

Further checks are made to ensure the car runs smoothly, and parts mounted  under the car are also examined. Bright lights are used to ensure no scratches or staines, with the human element vital for final checks.

After a shower test, the car is complete. Then it leaves the factory. Completed cars are moved to the nearby port. At the port, all the cars built at the plant are briefly stored, before being shipped domestically or overseas.

Thus, on average, there are 48.9 vehicles that are produced each minute in China, twice the total output of the next three countries combined - the US (20.7 cars), Japan (18.4 cars) and Germany (8.9 cars).

- In terms of brands, Toyota is the leading in terms of capacity, with 19.9 vehicles builded per minute, followed by the Volkswagen Group (19.8 vehicles). However, this German Corporation owns luxury brands and supercars like Bentley and Bugatti, and makes affordable cars like Volkswagen and Skoda, so it has almost every product in every segment.

- The third place of this list is Hyundai Group of Korea with 13.7 cars shipped every minute. The 4th is General Motors - GM (13 cars) and the 5th is Ford (12.2 cars).

- If counted separately, then Nissan ranked the 6th, with 11 cars manufactured each minute. However, if Nissan and Renault are combined, this alliance will be in third place, with 18.9 cars produced per minute, just behind Toyota and Volkswagen.

- Not only leading in terms of productivity, Toyota Group (including Lexus) is also the manufacturer with the highest revenue - 533,676 USD/minute. Next are Volkswagen and Daimler.

Although ranked 3rd in terms of productivity, Hyundai only ranked 11th in terms of revenue. The specific rankings are as follows:

Conclusion

The whole process of auto parts production and assembly is completely synchronized and self-contained, operated by a system of smart and modern and automatic machines through robots. As a result, the car production process can be shortened and productivity increased.
